So there I was, whittering away my time on facebook when I noticed I could resize the textbox of which I was writing my useless comment. My immediate thought was that facebook had opened up the ability to resize, but nay! In firefox 4 you now have the ability to resize textareas! Sweet! I’ve always admired it in google chrome and now us firefox lovers have it too!

So I’ve given this a quick google and I wasn’t able to find anything so forgive me if I’m covering something that’s already been covered by another. Just a little intro: Hinting is the way the text is aligned to the pixel grid. Sub-pixel rendering is the method used to anti-alias the edges of fonts. Both kind of different technologies who’s distinction blurs where sub-pixel rendering has just taken over where hinting has left off.
I noticed today that the font hinting on Chrome is not as good as firefox’s with regard to text on transparent backgrounds. Obviously this is all subjective and you may prefer the other but stick with me here. If you look at the attached screenshot you can really see the extent of the problem.
